INCREASED PREMIUM SALES TRIGGER NEW GROWTH FOR WALKER® QUIET-FLOW® SS MUFFLER LINE

Aftermarket’s Only Broad-Market Stainless Steel Muffler

Las Vegas, NV, Nov. 1, 2011 -The unqualified success of the Walker® Quiet-Flow® SS stainless steel replacement muffler from Tenneco Inc. (NYSE: TEN) has triggered yet another aggressive expansion in application coverage. Tenneco will continue to introduce new Quiet-Flow SS units during 2012, helping replacement parts distributors and repair providers sell the value of a longer-lasting, higher-margin muffler to tens of thousands of additional vehicle owners.

Tenneco’s premium muffler unit sales have grown in each of the two years since the introduction of the Walker Quiet-Flow SS product line, which runs counter to an almost decade-long industry trend away from premium mufflers. The key to this shift has been consumers’ clear preference for products manufactured from durable, corrosion-resistant stainless steel, according to Steve Myers, emission control engineering director, North American Aftermarket, Tenneco.

“Consumers understand the benefit of investing in a product that will last up to three times longer than typical aluminized mufflers,” Myers said. “Communicating this value is much easier for the repair provider, who previously might have had to explain how premium internal components or other internal muffler design features would benefit the customer. Now, when consumers hear “stainless steel,” they are more likely to understand the importance of selecting a premium unit.”

Each Quiet-Flow SS muffler features 409 stainless steel heads, shell, bushings, louvered tubes and partitions and is manufactured in the same facility as some of Tenneco’s original equipment units. The Quiet-Flow SS product line is comparably priced to the company’s previous, aluminized Quiet-Flow line. Tenneco also backs the Quiet-Flow SS line with its limited lifetime warranty and Safe and Sound® Guarantee 90-day consumer money-back offer.

Tenneco converted its Quiet-Flow production to stainless steel in 2009. The ability to offer an affordable broad-line premium stainless steel muffler is a result of the engineering, purchasing and manufacturing competencies associated with Tenneco’s global OE and aftermarket emission control businesses.

“We wanted to help our customers increase their profitability in the emission control category. Providing a higher value premium muffler at a competitive price was at the top of our list. The Quiet-Flow SS has filled that gap and is now helping our trade partners re-energize their emission businesses,” Myers said.
